Let’s Be Real For Sec

Hello Hello!!  Not that I am not real in all my other posts, I genuinely do wear everything that I tell you about and have an opinion and want to help everyone out.  I just want to take a minute to talk about high heels at work.  Now the question is don’t you wear heels all the time?  Yes and no.  I do wear heeled boots fairly frequently at work but these have block heels which are easy to walk in.  I don’t typically wear high heels to work I do once and a while and I am counting high heels as like over 3″.

Every once in a while I will have an outfit that I just don’t want to walk out the door in anything but heels.  Heels at work is hard because it is an 8+ hour day a work which is much more then a night out.

First, yes I do wear work pants every once and awhile, I will walk about these pants in another post but this one I want to talk about shoes.  I love these shoes, they are a great nude color and typically these are my fancy dress shoes.  They have about a 3 and a half inch heel.  I typically can wear these for a night out with out any issues.

Here is a quick side view of the heels.  Now when I was leaving the apartment I had a thought, what if I can’t wear these all day?  Now I was in the just put on the shoes confident mood so I was just like no, way I am wearing these all day and besides I have a desk job how hard could it be.  After that I had the second thought that I had meetings on different floors which meant stairs.  So right before I left I grabbed a pair of toms in case I didn’t make it all day.

Spoiler:  I did not make it all day in these shoes, I made it to 2:30pm, through all my meetings and after the last one I got back to my desk and my feet were just like I quit.

So this is where I ended up at 2:31pm at work, I cannot say I am upset about the choice to bring an extra pair of shoes.  My feet got a break and it was really nice.  I love these Toms.  Also, it was like a totally different look for the day, took the outfit from very businessy to casual at work.

Actually when I got complimented on my outfit it was because of these shoes so how knows which outfit is actually better.

Wardrobe Basics

Hello Hello!!  So there are a few items of clothing that everyone should have in their closet, you know like a little black dress, a trench coat, a great pair of jeans and an amazing pair of heels.  (Obviously I am talking about a women’s wardrobe).  One item that I think is essential to an office wardrobe is a great button up shirt.  I buy this shirt from express and honestly it is amazing.  It can be worn business formal, business casual and just anywhere you want.

What I love about this shirt that I have not seen in a lot of other button up shirts is what I will call wearability.  So this shirt is not stiff, it allows so much movement and breathability that I cannot say how awesome that is to have at work.  This shirt is made of semi-sheer fabric which allows it to not be stiff and does not show wrinkles.  Which if you work in an office you will know how amazing that is, especially if you are like me and are hot and cold and are putting cardigans on and off all day.

So yes I do own this in 3 colors.  I originally bought it in blue and didn’t think too much about it.  But after wearing it a few times I realized how awesome it is.  Then I got annoyed that I bought it in blue, a less versatile color.  I love blue I do but I cannot wear it with everything.  So I have been watching this shirt for a few months waiting for it to go on sale so I can pick it up in black, then I thought having it in white would be great too.

So over Thanksgiving Express had a sale for 50% off everything so it was like a 2 for 1 deal and I bought in the white and black.  There is currently a sale at Express and it looks like 50% off again.

I wear this shirt all the time, I wear them in the same week and sometimes think I should stop but then I think no one will notice.

What is business casual for women? Winter Edition

Hello Hello!! I have wanted to do another one of these post for awhile, I got a lot of positive feed back on the original that I thought it would be good to do another one.  Business causal is such an ambiguous term that I still am not sure what it fully entails.  Last week I was meeting with some lawyers for work so obviously I was wearing what I considered to be business formal (was wearing pants and a blazer) the lawyer called it business casual and I was just like sure.

So real quick I just want to give a shout out to the real work horse of my winter wardrobe, tights.  Now as I am sure a lot of you will notice I do not wear work pants, I just don’t like them and find them to be uncomfortable.  So I tend to continue to wear skirts and dresses throughout the winter which entails needing great tights.  I tend to pair these skirts with tights and boots throughout the winter.

Now I was going to change up how I do these, mostly because I have been running late in the morning recently so I haven’t had much extra time.  But I did actually take pics of my outfits this morning so yay!  Pat on the back for me.

Monday –

For full disclosure I wore a pair of brown knee high boots with this.  Without the tights I would not wear this skirt to work, why?  Well the length of the skirt is about 2 inches above the knee which on its own I think is too short.  A work skirt I feel should end at the shortest just above the knee.  But pairing the skirt with the tights the length is no longer apparent.  I added a very businessy black button up shirt on the top and it is perfect for work.  Do adding knee high boots take away from this being a business outfit?  In my opinion no, leather boots are very chic and adding them to a business outfit just adds to it.  (Now in a business formal setting I would probably not wear knee high boots).

Tuesday –

This dress is one of my more formal work dresses, if I paired it with a black blazer I would consider it a business formal outfit.  So this day it was about dressing the dress down a little bit.  Again I was wearing a pair of black tights and this day I wore low booties.  I added this burgundy waterfall cardigan to add some color to the outfit.  The cardigan while on its own is very nice, it made the very formal dress become more business casual.  Then I added some gold jewelry to brighten up the outfit.

Wednesday –

I consider this to be one of my best skirts, it has this great A-line fit, HAS POCKETS, and is amazing almost year round.  The skirt is really great paired with tights and sometimes I will tuck a sweater into on colder days.  This skirt has business written all over it.  When I pair it with a crisp white button up, this is business casual to a T.  The outfit is not too formal to be considered business formal, I would add a great black blazer to get there.  To be a little more casual change these heels out for a pair of black flats (or red flats to make a statement).

Thursday –

So for whatever reason Thursdays I tend to have a lot of meetings so I do tend to dress up a little bit more.  So again here is the sidewalk skirt (I wore it on Monday in a different color, I own 3 of them), paired with black tights.  I wore this brown skirt with a navy dressy tank tucked into it.  Since I do have a lot of meetings I added, what I call, my casual blazer.  This blazer is great because it is cotton and not stiff at all so when I wear it I don’t feel like I am wearing a blazer.  As I have said before you can dress this down more by changing the heels out for flats or knee high boots or booties and it will still be a great business casual outfit.

Friday –

Wait thats not business casual!!  Correct, Fridays are casual days at work so obviously I take advantage and wear jeans. I will talk about a question I have had for a few weeks about if these boots are appropriate for casual day at work.  So why am I asking this question if I have been wearing boots all the time?  Well these boots go over the knee, which are very in right now but there is a stimga with over the knee boots.  (When you think of them in your head you probably picture Julia Roberts in pretty woman with her black leather high heeled over the knee boots).  Which obviously these are very different, these are grey suede flat boots.

I wore them to work when I bought them not thinking too much about that they may not be appropriate.  A coworker walked by me in the hall and just said “Wow, those are some boots.”  We didn’t stop and talk so I was not sure what the meant but the rest of the day I was worried about maybe I shouldn’t have worn them.  And since then I hadn’t until this past Friday.  So what changed?  Well a few weeks ago on Friday, one of the higher up woman in the company I saw wearing very similar boots to mine only in black.  And when I saw that I was like well I am going to wear mine again next Friday, try and stop me!!  Haha.

Also current for the next few days these boots are 50% off, they are amazing and I recommend them to any one.  Btw I have 15 inch calves and I can wear them with skinny jeans no problem.

Hello Hello!!!  So I know a lot of people use this styling service, I do as well.  I originally signed up for it because my friend got me a gift card.  I was hesitant to sign up prior because I personally do not think I need help picking out or styling my clothes but they do have access to some really great clothes that I wanted access to, so I signed up.

To be very honest, I have a love/ hate relationship with the service, after almost every fix I debate cancelling because there is something about it that disappointed me.  It always brings up the question of, can another person really know your personal style?  Especially if this person has never met you or talked to you?

I provided my “stylist” from stitchfix with a link to this blog and I think this is a good representation of me and still I struggle with what is sent to me as not my style or a duplication of something I talked about on my blog so I already owned it.  So it is just very disappointing that this “stylist” duplicates what I already own or just does not understand my personal style.

Now don’t get me wrong I do try to buy something every time so the service is not a waste of money.  And some of the stuff that I buy I really do love, I just wish I loved more than just one piece every fix.

From left to right, the top is a really basic grey t-shirt, the navy top is sheer and dresses up nicely and finally this cargo jacket is really great.

From left to right, this bomber jacket, the striped top that is sheer in the back and finally this patterned skirt.

So there is a lot that I have liked and bought from them but I am just unhappy that I basically only like one thing from each fix.  And the last fix I got, almost everything was a duplicate of something I already owned.  In the most recent fix they basically sent me the same outfit that is in the top middle.  They sent me another navy blue tank top and a metallic gold pleated skirt, they sent it to me after I had posted about that outfit on the blog.

So it is a battle in frustration, and as of right now I have not cancelled it but it is a question I debate all the time.  Sometimes I just wish they would send me some of the really cute stuff that is on their social media instead of the stuff that I get sent.

My verdict is mostly disappointing and did not live up to my expectations.  Also I just really do not think that the stylist really gets my personal style and that is what causes problems.

Making casual clothing work in the office setting

Hello Hello!!  This is all about wardrobe maximization, I am going to share a few items that you would not expect to be able to wear in a business setting and how to make them work for you.  This is all about acknowledging what is making the piece of clothing casual and working to mitigate that with your other clothes.  I am going to show you a few ways that I did this.

The Casual Fancy T-Shirt

Now yes this is a nicer shirt than a graphic T-shirt but I would never recommend wearing a graphic T-shirt in a business casual setting.  So the fact that this is a little nicer then a regular T-shirt allows it to work in a business setting.  So what is stopping me from wearing this to work by itself?  Well first it is still a T-shirt and second the bottom of the shirt is just adds to the very T-shirt vibe.

Alright, so my fixes are first tuck the bottom of that shirt into a really great skirt, it does not have to be a super businessy skirt (this one is not) but adding the skirt some tights and a pair of heels really does take the casual away from the shirt.  If you still feel like the shirt you picked is too casual add a cardigan or blazer and that will take away the sleeves.

The Crop Top

First let’s state the obvious, this is a crop top and it is meant to show off your belly.  So you would not want to wear this just by itself to work (even on a casual day)  No one in the HR department wants to see your belly.

So my fixes – well you need to take away what makes it a crop top by tucking in the bottom.  So the skirt that you pair it with should be high waisted.  As well as the skirt’s waist band should be good so that the bottom of the shirt does not slip out.  That is the one tip I have, is to be careful with this shirt slipping out.  As well as be careful with skirts that have an eye hook on them.  Otherwise this shirt is pretty appropriate as long as you hide the fact that it is a crop top.

Waterfall Cardigan

So this one is not too hard but I do have a few that have some pretty bright patterns on them.  I love these cardigans because it is like wearing a blanket. I like wearing it under coats because it sticks out and looks cool.

So paired the cardigan with one of my most businessy dresses.  Doing this kind of evens each piece out and the outfit is a perfect business casual outfit with a flare of personality.  I belted the cardigan to keep it a little bit more under control.  Easy to remove the belt at your desk and get more of a blanket affect.

New skirt

Hello hello!!! Is anyone out there looking for a great business casual skirt that is bold but can still work in your wardrobe?  I have found a great one and it’s on sale.  This skirt is similar to one I own and have been waiting to buy again.  When I ordered it the final price came out to $20, but it is a final sale so be careful with sizing.

So I just got this yesterday so I have only worn it once but I feel fine recommending it since it’s so similar to my favorite skirt.  It’s a really comfortable skirt and the button details on the side are really great to accentuate your figure.  The color is the reason I bought it, who doesn’t want to own a red pencil skirt.  It will make a big statement every time you wear it.

So the reason I was so willing to buy this online without trying it on was because I have a very similar skirt from Loft already.  The skirt was such a great deal that I was ok if it didn’t fit.  So my waist is 27″ and I do have a butt and thighs. I ordered a regular size 4 and it does fit well a little big around my waist but I’m ok with that.

Mixing Patterns

Hello Hello!!  Now I wanted to share and outfit that I have been envisioning in my head for awhile (or like since I bought the shirt).  As I previously stated the last time I did a blog post about mixing pattern, I don’t typically do it because its hard and I don’t own a lot of patterned clothing so it is hard to mix what you don’t have.

Anyways I am super excited about this outfit.

So these are two of my most comfortable clothes so I decided to combine them together and be super comfortable at work.  (I mean leaving out the heels of course).

So why does this work for mixing patterns?  When I mix patterns I like to stick with one piece that is black and white.  I consider a black and white pattern to be one of the most neutral you can get because both colors go well with anything.  I added my patterned skirt and this takes the outfit to a bold level.  I love it, I feel like yes there is a lot going on but it is still very flattering.  The horizontal strips typically are not very flattering but given the shirt is tucked into a pencil skirt and my waist is defined, it works out very well.
