New skirt

Hello hello!!! Is anyone out there looking for a great business casual skirt that is bold but can still work in your wardrobe?  I have found a great one and it’s on sale.  This skirt is similar to one I own and have been waiting to buy again.  When I ordered it the final price came out to $20, but it is a final sale so be careful with sizing.

So I just got this yesterday so I have only worn it once but I feel fine recommending it since it’s so similar to my favorite skirt.  It’s a really comfortable skirt and the button details on the side are really great to accentuate your figure.  The color is the reason I bought it, who doesn’t want to own a red pencil skirt.  It will make a big statement every time you wear it.

So the reason I was so willing to buy this online without trying it on was because I have a very similar skirt from Loft already.  The skirt was such a great deal that I was ok if it didn’t fit.  So my waist is 27″ and I do have a butt and thighs. I ordered a regular size 4 and it does fit well a little big around my waist but I’m ok with that.

Mixing Patterns

Hello Hello!!  Now I wanted to share and outfit that I have been envisioning in my head for awhile (or like since I bought the shirt).  As I previously stated the last time I did a blog post about mixing pattern, I don’t typically do it because its hard and I don’t own a lot of patterned clothing so it is hard to mix what you don’t have.

Anyways I am super excited about this outfit.

So these are two of my most comfortable clothes so I decided to combine them together and be super comfortable at work.  (I mean leaving out the heels of course).

So why does this work for mixing patterns?  When I mix patterns I like to stick with one piece that is black and white.  I consider a black and white pattern to be one of the most neutral you can get because both colors go well with anything.  I added my patterned skirt and this takes the outfit to a bold level.  I love it, I feel like yes there is a lot going on but it is still very flattering.  The horizontal strips typically are not very flattering but given the shirt is tucked into a pencil skirt and my waist is defined, it works out very well.

How to get away with wearing a T-shirt to work.

Hello hello!! Do you ever have one of those days where you go in your closet and don’t want to wear any of it?  Well I had one of those mornings today. I looked at my work clothes and was just like no. I didn’t want to wear a nice shirt that required a nice bra and an undershirt, that felt like way too much for me today. Haha.  So I kind of went in and was like what’s comfy? And can I wear it to work?

So first question, yes this is a T-shirt, you cannot wear a graphic T to a job.  This is a really casual shirt I typically wear it to lounge or run errands, I do sometimes wear it on casual Fridays with colored jeans and a nice necklace.  This was the shirt I wanted to wear because I can wear a comfy bra and no undershirt so I asked what can I wear this shirt with to get away with it?

To dress up the T-shirt to make it work appropriate it needs to be paired with statement work pieces. First, the bottoms I picked a pencil skirt, this skirt in particular is great for dressing things up. It’s a statement work piece that when paired with this ultra casual shirt all of a sudden the outfit is work appropriate.  Then because I do sit down in meetings I did need to dress up the top so I added this statement necklace.

All in all I was very comfortable today and pretty pleased with this outfit. Will it be added to my regular rotation? Nah I’ll leave it for those desperate days when I am tired.

When Work Dinners Come Up

Hello Hello!!  Well marketing is in town this week and that means presentations and work dinners.  I always feel like I need to dress up more then I already do for these weeks.  (Don’t get me wrong I love dressing up and usually do for work, but when marketing is in town I just notch it up a little bit).  Usually me dressing up for then I already do is me wearing heels.

Bold skirts all day every day! These are probably two of my favorite pencil skirts, they are pretty comfortable so I can wear them all day.  Which makes them perfect for marketing week, I can wear them all day and work and still be comfortable and fancy enough for a marketing dinner. I love to pair these skirts with these lose sheer shirts, they give a very professional vibe.

These heels I have had FOREVER, I mean forever, I bought them when I was in college interviewing for jobs.  Since I have had them so long they are one of the most comfortable pairs I own, and can wear them all day.

When I think about wearing work clothes all day long and into the evening, I am looking to wear my skirts with stretch and give to them, and then I want to wear a lose shirt.  This combo combines to make the outfit easier to wear all day and will balance out the fact that wearing heels all day kind of sucks no matter how much you have broken in the shoes.

Grandpa Cardigan

Hello Hello!!  What is up?  For those of you not too busy watching the game (any body outside of USA may not know it is SuperBowl Sunday) I am writing a quick blog post about a cardigan.

I call it my grandpa cardigan, I think the product description said boyfriend cardigan but it reminds me of a sweater my grandpa used to wear so that is what I am going to call it.  This is the cardigan it looks super light which it is but it still manages to be one of the warmest cardigans I own.  Now I actually would not recommend buying it now, I would wait I think Amazon owns the brand so I would check back on one of Amazon’s big sale days to see if it goes on sale.  I bought it for about half the price on one of those days, totally worth it for $30, not so much at $60.

I bought it in grey and love to wear it unbuttoned and open like this. I think it really compliments any wardrobe because it is lose.  I enjoy wearing it with a v-neck shirt tucked into skinny jeans because the cardigan is long enough that it will cover up my butt.  I have been wearing it to work as well, I have been mostly wearing it like the middle picture.  I wear it with one of my skirts, it will dress it down a little bit but still be business casually appropriate.

Outfit from Friday night going to dinner and a movie with a friend.  Layered it up with one of my leather jackets, loving the look and will probably wear it more.

How to create the illusion of a smaller waist

Hello hello!! Yes I know the first question, do you have to do this aren’t you already skinny?  So yes I am skinny but I am not curvy, my waist does not really curve in much.  If I wear a traditional bodycon dress, from the front I look like I don’t have a shape, where as from the side you can see I have curves.  (Pics below, I dug out my last bodycon dress and I tried it on for you).  So this is due to the fact that I do not have a large chest and I have small hips, so my waist curves in but not by a lot.

So this is a dress that is probably going to be given away the next time I clean out my closet.  The pic on the left is not as flattering as a typically bodycon dress.  But from the side you can see that I do have curves.  This dress was one I bought in college when all I really wanted was short and tight. Now that I am a little older I dress to highlight my figure better.

In order to make my waist stand out and appear smaller in dresses or skirts, I do one of two things.

  • I wear a top that is tight on top and on the bottom look for a skirt that flares out from the body at least a little bit.
  • Or I wear a skirt that is tight and pair it with a shirt that is loose.

I picked this dress to use for this because it is similar to the other one in color and shape.  I like this one a lot more then the other one because it flatters my figure better.  This dress fits into the first category, it has a tight top and even though the bottom appears tight in the pic on the right you see it is only tight right at the waist.  The dress highlights my waist because the top of the dress appears to float and the skirt portion is tight at the waist creating a very flattering silhouette.

These outfits fit into the second category- tight skirt paired with a loose top.  This is typically an outfit I wear to work using my pencil skirts for the bottom.  These are both examples I wore last week, these skirts are staples in my work wardrobe.  On top I usually use a sheer top with a cami underneath, I own a good variety of these tops to be worn with my pencil skirts.  The silhouette is created by the skirt with is doing all the work, the loose top being tucked into the skirt highlights the waist.

Here are a few more examples-

These Tights

Hello World! I just want to take a minute to talk about a real workhorse of my wardrobe. I am going to talk about tights, I know I know how lame.  But I really want to touch on this topic really quickly today.  So I have probably mentioned this before but I really do not like to wear work pants, a good pair are really hard to find and they are for the most part not comfortable to work in.  In the winter I still really strive to continue to wear my skirts and dress outfits, not all of them but a few.  As previously stated I live somewhere with winter so in order to make this outfit work I add a pair of tights.

These tights are what I wear all the time in the winter.  Why do I love them?  They go really high as well as the waist band on these is large, its not a control top, but what this does is make sure the tights do not bit into you or create a love handle.  I wear these all the time, and they are unbelievably durable.  I have owned a few pairs for the past 2 years and they have no runs in them and still look like new.  I seriously recommend that you buy these they are worth the money.

I know if you go to the link they do cost a lot but seriously worth the money, I have never gotten a run in mine.
